  • I almost left the insurance industry two times, once to own pizza franchises and the other to start a landscaping company.
  • I almost left the carrier side to be a broker but was worried that I would make too much money.
  • Based on my stories, my kids think Underwriters are “Fun Police,” and they need to find something that could go wrong with everything.

Personal Facts

 

  • I am from Philadelphia, but I now reside in Medford, NJ. I have a son, Jake, a daughter, Jessica, and am a dog dad to Ash, a Charcoal Lab.
  • Ash loves to visit Admiral and say hi to everyone, and everyone loves the puppy-therapy!
  • I have a crazy sense of humor and like to do voice impersonations.
  • I was an ice hockey goalie for 30 years and played with some professional players.

Professional Bio

Dan Smyrl is the President of Admiral Insurance Group and leads more than 300 employees dedicated to providing creative solutions for hard-to-place risks. Prior to becoming President, Dan served as Executive Vice President, overseeing Admiral’s Casualty and Professional Liability Underwriting teams.

Dan has been with Admiral since 2002 and has more than 40 years of commercial property and casualty insurance experience in underwriting and management. He started his insurance career in 1982 and has worked for numerous companies, including Pennsylvania Lumbermens, Cigna, Guardian Royal Exchange, Fireman’s Fund, and USLI.

Dan holds both the Associate in Surplus Lines Insurance (ASLI) and Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU) designations. Additionally, he is on the board of the New Jersey Surplus Lines Association (NJSLA), where he assists with fostering the interests of the excess and surplus lines industry within the state of New Jersey. He is also an Executive Committee Chair for the 2024 Big Climb Philadelphia, where he works diligently with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to raise funds and awareness for blood cancer research.
