To bring recognition to Men’s Health Awareness month, we spoke with Michael Schmidt, cancer survivor and Director, Portfolio and Change Management at Admiral. Michael discusses the importance of bringing awareness to men’s health and ways to support a healthy lifestyle.
Why do you think Men’s Health Awareness month is important in the workplace, and what are some ways companies can help?
I find it encouraging when a company places a focus on health awareness. It sends a strong message to employees that they value their personal well-being. As for Men’s Health specifically, the big statistic is that men often delay routine check-ups and will only address their health when a concern arises. Let’s change that! In my opinion, a way companies can support employees is by making it commonplace to discuss healthy habits in and outside the workplace and offering flexibility so taking time off is no biggie but encouraged.

How did you get interested in insurance?
I wish I had an exciting story, but mine is like many in the industry; Insurance as a career was not on my radar 15+ years ago. I had a friend working for an E&S carrier that introduced me to the field, and I saw a great opportunity to learn and grow in a space that is challenging and innovative. I took a leap of faith and very happy I did. Insurance, especially E&S, has so much to offer and would pique anyone’s interest!
Are there any tips you’d recommend for men looking to take charge of their health?
My personal recommendations would be:
- Schedule your routine check-ups. Just get it on the books before life becomes too busy.
- Find your support system. Surround yourself with like-minded people who have similar health goals. It’s a nice way to keep each other accountable.
- Get some sleep! I am still working on this one. But when I do this well, everything is just…better!
- Take advantage of your company’s benefits! Admiral provides great wellness and mental health benefits that provide the resources needed to take care of me and my family’s health.
What advice would you give to younger professionals about prioritizing health while building their careers?
Not prioritizing your health and focusing heavily on your career often seems like an easy trade-off. There may be some short-term gain there, but ultimately, I believe the old adage – slow and steady wins the race. Prioritizing your health alongside your career and finding the right balance means you are built for longevity. Even as we think about mental health, burnout is very real, so take care of every aspect of your health. Invest in yourself so you can tackle any professional or personal goal you wish to achieve.
What workplace habits or routines do you think support both health and productivity?
Be comfortable taking a day off when you need it. Let’s be real – if you’re working through an illness, you’re not that productive anyway. Lol! If you have a supportive manager like I do who “gets it,” they will encourage you to take time off and recharge. It’s a win-win for you and your organization.
